Spreading God’s Fame
“Spreading the fame of God” is the slogan for our church. This week we sent off a group to West Virginia and soon we will be sending off a group to Guatemala. These are all great but I have to ask, what are we as a church doing to spread the fame of God locally? More importantly, what am I doing locally?
While I’m all about letting my everyday actions speak louder than words, I have to wonder about my everyday actions themselves. It seems that most of them are not very intentional about spreading the fame of God — wake up, go to work, make web applications, go home, do things around the house, hang with friends … that’s about it. Sure there may be glimpses of opportunities in that schedule but they only occur when someone takes the time to get in my world.
What can I do to be open to someone else’s world? Regina helped at a local Methodist church’s Vacation Bible School program and they seem to really have a good connection with serving the community — they have food drives, donate school supplies to needy kids, etc. on a regular basis.
So I have a couple of ideas I want to document. Maybe you have some more to add — or maybe even help coordinate them.
- Give away bananas at the local Bruster’s Ice Cream Shop on banana split day. The bananas could have stickers to the church website.
- There is going to be a soccer training camp in Guatemala this summer, it seems like that would be easy to pull off in the Cumming area.
- Advertise and set up a chipper for people to recycle their Christmas trees — maybe use the mulch for the church playground or find somewhere that needs it.

You did more than you think while I was around you on a daily basis. Don’t sell yourself short. It’s the day to day consisntency that is the powerful stuff. But stickers on bananas is quite clever.

DavE-
As we discussed this weekend, Barb and I want our kids to really feel/sense what it is we have been trying to teach them-that God has been most gracious to us a family with His kind bountiful blessings and that we need to be thankful for that. It is hard to convey that to kids without giving them a picture of what else is out there so they can “compare” so to speak.
To that end, we have found a ministry that focuses on helping the poor and providing meals to those who struggle feeding themselves and their families. Since our kids are so young, this is just a start-making lunches at home and at a local church to be distributed. As they get older, Lord willing, they/we can get out there and actually interact face to face with those who are in need. The website for this ministry is mustministries.org. It is our hope that as we serve those in need and model Christ’s love, our kids will develop a greater sense of the majesty of God and the magnitude of the sacrifice of Jesus.

Give up cable. Send the money to Guatemala.

Currently only have broadcast basic (ABC, CBS, NBC, GPTV, TBS and CMT by the grace of God). There is plenty of need right here in North Atlanta.
While we teased Mr. Weeks (sp?) about saying something inspirational, he actually did say something that stuck with me…

I’m with you Dave, the question is where to start. I wonder if any of the bigger churches in the area have in-roads we could help out with to get started.

Thx Pat … Regina has done stuff through MustMinistries before.
Where to start? That’s a good idea O’Ryan. I thought I would call Midway Methodist and get some connections going there.
This reminds me of a great question that another pastor friend of mine recently asked on his blog, “If our church disappeared…would (insert your community name here) miss us?”
