Joy in the Morning

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 9:41 am | Posted in Family.

Well today is the second day in a row that I have been up before the sun. In order to help with the transition from night person to morning person, I am back to having one cup of coffee in the morning now. Overall, it is a great improvement in being able to have time with the kids in the evening AND get them to bed at a decent hour — giving Regina and I more time together. I guess this waking up early thing isn’t so bad. I hope I can get used to it soon.

I like to see the sunrise burning off the morning dew and creating a fog over the cowfields. I will enjoy it while I can as I get the feeling I will soon be watching the sun rise up over more neighborhoods and/or strip malls.

I started getting up at 0500 about — wow, is this right? — three or so years ago. About a year ago I started making that an every day routine… Saturdays and Sundays included. It was the only time of the day when I could count on the ability to apply undivided attention to things like quiet times. Besides, once I slow down to set the pace for the kids’ bedtime, there’s just no picking it back up…

Now it’s to the point that I’m bummed when 0700 rolls around: proactivity goes out the window and the tyranny of the urgent takes over.

Another oddity: I found myself getting depressed in the springtime as the days got longer. I realized that I got used to only being able to get stuff done before the sun came up, so when the sun started coming up earlier, I only felt like I was falling behind…

The US Army figured that one out years ago. To quote Ben Franklin-Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

I’m with Hugh. I’ve been getting up at 0500 for a decade or so now and I love it. I, too, keep it up on weekends. If not, I just don’t have the time to be in God’s word with the attention that it needs. I commend your new course.

Ever since I was little I have been an early riser. No alarms, no clocks, nothing. My body knows when it’s 5:30. Sleeping late is 6:00.

Kudos to you for making the switch from late nights to early mornings. You feel like you tackle so much more in the day dontcha?

    Cheers.

You know, ever since I was little I have been a late riser. No alarms, no clocks - my body just seems to know when it is 10:00 a.m.!!! Sleeping late is sleeping until noon.

However, the days I rise early - I get far more done than the days I rise late - so, I long for Mel’s genetics - and PDiddy’s discipline.

    Keep it up DaveE.
