The Misinformation Age

So what are some of the major ages in the history of man? Stone, bronze, iron, metal, and now the age of information. In the early 90’s, I remember seeing a video tape of Newt Gingrich lecturing a college class about the possibly of living in the information age. Imagine physicians from around the world coming together to diagnose a rare disease in real-time over video with the vast expanse of the internet at their finger tips.

In all the previous ages, what is one consistent thing people made with their main resource? Weapons. That’s why I’m beginning to think we are in what is more appropriately labeled the “misinformation age.” From the left-wing traditional media to the right-wing new media, it seems that no one is really that concerned about the truth anymore — just promoting causes. But what for? Money? Power? If for no other reason than just to beat the other guy?

What’s worse is when you see the same thing happening in religious circles. As I study the Bible online and read other’s essays and commentaries, I see people on all sides of issues present proof texts (using one or two verses, usually not related, to prove that the Bible backs up an idea) and then claim that they are the only ones that follow the Bible as God’s Word. But what for? Some to defend the name of God, others to defend their projected ideas of God — maybe even for money and power.

There is a lot of information available to us, be careful. Examine all sides of the issue. Look deeper and see where each position leads you. Just like metal can either be used to create great cities or to make instruments of war, make sure that what you believe as truth isn’t just someone’s axe they are in the process of grinding.

you are so right we are in an misinformation age. the main reason for this is tha tpeople go to media that tells them what they want to hear. so the msm gets its audiences and the bloggers get theirs and am radio gets its audience on and on people only or mostly listening to what agrees with them and not being challenged. that’s why i try to listen to and read various media. i am a big npr junkie and now i listen to democracy now on pacifica radio and read the aljezra website i check out centcom’s website and read the bbc too. i think the bbc is the best news for us to read about our selves.

you are right the online bible stuff can be bad! but here is a ray of hope checkout http://www.preachermike.com/ he is doing a series on the nature of the bible that is really good.

I’m a year too late for commenting, perhaps, but you hit the nail right on the head. The idea of “weapons of (mis)information” and your comparison with previous ages got my noodle working in ways it hadn’t in years.

Oh oh, FoxNews is on and I need to know more about Paris Hilton, gotta go…
