Life Imitating Art(hur)
It’s probably too late for us but maybe this will help some other parents out there. I’m generally pretty flexible in what my kids see on TV - Camryn likes the surgery shows on TLC and Discovery Channel. We also all watched Spiderman 2 together - lessons of good v/s evil and doing what’s right even when you don’t want to.
However, we are officially banning the PBS kid’s show Arthur from our TV. Just this past weekend some friends mentioned that they didn’t like the example that the siblings set when they interact with each other and the parents. Well, yesterday Camryn threw a temper tantrum that was the spitting image of DW (the little sister on the show). Oscar material? Who knows.
I’ve always been suspect of the theme song too. It pretty much says, “listen to your heart” and “believe in yourself” - more Oprahanity.

We have booted watching anything related to Mr. Snuffalupogous. Vicki and I believe there must be some tie to a mid-east terrorist organization.

I agree witht the Arthur expulsion. I would add to the list Power rangers, Ninja Turtles, Static Shock, Teen Titans, Anime, Lilo & Stitch, etc., etc., etc.
On a positive note I would suggest Disney’s House of Mouse. I have never heard my Josh laugh so hard. And for the most part it is age appropriate.

A strange furry creature that can talk! 1T 1S t3h 3v1L! I also suggest taking children out of school and society all together…just to be sure.

Yeah yeah, sorry but sheltering is not the issue for me. My 4 year old daughter happened to love Spiderman 2 and Return of the King - great stories with lessons of right and wrong. We all got to enjoy the movies together. She would ask questions and we’d get to talk about what was happening.
The problem with PBS is that most parents use the time that Arthur and Caillou come on as time to get a bit of work done or make a phone call or two. They plop their kid down in front of the tube and let it babysit for a while. The kid learns some good moral lesson but also learns that when your parents ask you to do something, folding your arms, turning your back on them and screaming, “I DON’T WANNA DO THAT!” is an acceptable response.
So … then we have to teach them that even though nothing happens to D.W. or Caillou when they behave that way, kids in our family have another thing coming.
