Essay or Multiple Choice Faith

Ok so this is a smaller point in the beginning of the book I’m reading but I like it. Peacock makes the analogy of most Christians have a multiple choice knowledge of their faith. What does this mean? If you give someone a multiple choice test then they can look at the offered answers, deduct a few things from their limited knowledge and have a pretty good chance of getting it correct. While essays are a whole different game. They make clear that you either know what you are talking about or you don’t - sometimes painfully clear.

We can spout out the names of baseball players, individual and team stats, game scores, or details about whatever it is that we are passionate about but when it comes to being able to verbalize or define our faith we fumble over “Christian” phrases that don’t hold any meaning to anyone else. One of the words that has lost any meaning these days is “Christian.” In the book he uses “student-follower of Christ”. That seemed to really tick off the guy that gave the book a bad review but from what he said it seems he missed the whole point of the book. Peacock spends the first 2 chapters setting up the book then spends the next four reviewing God’s story from creation to redemption. It’s a long road of reading but he drops in nuggets like this to keep you going till he reaches the meat of the content.

One other point he makes is that we should teach our children the stories of the old testiment to help them feel like a larger part of a community. It teaches them the first part of God’s story so they will know where they fit in later. It also gives them a since of “heritage” - kind of like an adopted Gentile. I will post a quote later because he says it much better than I, but here is a fine example of me not knowing my essay. :)
