Six Month Music Itch

Yep it’s that time of year again. The time where I go down in the basement for Christmas decorations or whatever reason and think to myself, “What a waste of resources.” I have this perfectly good music studio that isn’t being used for two reasons. The lack of time (or motivation) and a couple of missing gear links. I have one computer with an outdated OS but has Protools on it (industry standard recording software). The problem is I have a lack of external synthesizer tones for it. Then I have this laptop which has GarageBand on it. It’s consumer level software but it inspires musical creativity like no software I’ve ever seen before.

I also have this mammoth mixing console that I used when I had three ADATs (tape based digital recording) hooked up to it. Now I just have one ADAT and haven’t used it in years. I’d love to sell it but don’t want to mess with eBay - the shipping and effort would be outrageous. I also have this crazy thought that I might actually make a hit and get into the music industry and then kick myself for selling such a great board.

I think I am going to pack it up in the closet space in the basement and focus on the “creative” setup. Making music should be fun, shouldn’t it? It would also give the kids some play space in the basement. Man, as I head into the new year I need to decide if making music is going to be a priority.

Don’t despair. Like any good project manager, when faced with constrained resources, change your scope. Or your requirements for that matter. I produce music in my studio because I enjoy it. I have given up on the “big one” that could launch my career in audio production. After all, I have my own band of Schultz’ in need of “engineering and producing” :)

if you don’t want to mess with ebay you can always use craig’s list. they have an atlanta listing.
