The Odd Couple - The Left and Right Brain

It’s funny, at work the guy who is teaching me Coldfusion is a CF expert who was also a math major in college. Now I’ve never had a single class on basic programming concepts. I’m just kinda picking it up as I go. Anyway, as he is talking to me, I’d say a good 60% just goes straight over my head. When I tell him I have no idea what he’s talking about, he gets frustrated. This leads me to a question:

Can you teach a designer to program?

It seems a lot easier than teaching a programmer how to have a sense of style - I don’t think you can even teach that - but it’s turning out to be more difficult than I thought. When I design the whole right side of the brain kicks in and I start having a blast. When I try to program I feel like an idiot. My CF mentor will say, “How do you create a struct?” and I will reply, “What’s a struct?”

Maybe I just had a bad day. Maybe it’s the cloudy weather getting me down. Maybe it’s because I suck at math. I just feel so lost when comes to basic programming concepts. I think I will ask another friend if he can tutor me on the side. I really think that if I learned this stuff I could be an “ALL IN ONE” web designer.

Don’t all artists suck at math - and thus the great divide? Well I guess not musicians, the greatest musicians are supposed to be good at math since they are so closely related.

    CF is for wusses!

I am good at math, but rely on the mathmatical relationship in music too often when I should be listening more.
