After a long sabaticle of not watching TLC we watched a new Trading Spaces last night where America got to vote for who the new designer was going to be. They had four contestants. One of them was the dude that won their morgage at the end of last season. He is an art director down in Orlando and really did some great stuff during the contest last year.
All the other people were professional interior designers that really came across as snooty and all “it’s all about good design – something that is beautiful, has scale, balance and pushes the limits.” They all seemed to think they were God’s gift to interior decorating.
Well the dude from last season won again and here’s why I think he did. He just seemed to be about the work and not himself. He said things like, “I just get these ideas and so I draw them out and we’ll see if they work.” Now, he does do GREAT work but he’s not trying to come across as if he knows more than everyone else. He just does the work, has fun with people and lets his work speak for itself.
I think I have been leaning too much the other way in my professional life. Like I have to prove that I really can design slick sites. Like I need to use big wordd to describe navigation plans and site maps to come across like I kknow something about this web design thing. Well, why don’t I sit back back and let my work speak for itself? If people want my opinion they will listen. I can’t force them to change their mind or see things the way I do.
So now I will try to so the best I can as unto Him and if people want my opinion I will speak to the issue that they are concerned about and not try to fluff it up with “I know what I’m talking about so you should listen to me” speak.
